Volunteering at Boomerang

Volunteering is a challenging experience and it can be very rewarding, knowing that you may have made a difference

Volunteering is about giving your time to do something useful. In return you get the satisfaction of time and effort well spent.

During 2008 Boomerang provided 25 volunteering places resulting in a contribution of a total of 62331 hours to the centres provision.

Volunteers come from all walks of life and age groups. They are people who like talking to others and are also able to listen. They are willing to share their time and experience. Volunteers receive appropriate training, ongoing support, out of pocket expenses and opportunities to meet with other volunteers.

  Why Volunteer?
Volunteering can offer you the chance to learn new skills, use your existing skills and expertise, develop new interests, meet people and become active in bringing about social change. The diverse nature of volunteering means everyone can get involved. You may be unemployed, retired, returning to work, or wanting to gain experience for your CV. Perhaps you would like to devote some of your spare time to helping others or to put something back into the community. Whatever your circumstances, volunteering is a fantastic way of building self confidence, developing your interpersonal skills and increasing your chances of employment.

No1 - Volunteer Centre

With the opening of the new Volunteer Centre we are looking to increase the number of local volunteers joining us to provide services to the local community.

The Volunteer Centre will also provide local groups and organisations with a space to provide regular surgeries for the residents of Stobswell.

Young volunteers "chill out" area

Volunteers With Boomerang are recruited, trained and matched appropriately to a group or position of their choosing.

Befriending Project

Through the Volunteer project we aim to recruit local people as volunteers to provide a befriending service and home assistance for elderly residents within the Stobswell area, developing new relationships and providing support enabling them to live independently within the community whilst experiencing a better quality of life.

Befriending is very flexible and can encompass many different activities from a chat and a cup of tea, to playing games, or occasional trips to the park, shopping or outings and so on.

All volunteers are given thorough induction training before being placed with a service user, this is followed up by regular supervision and support as well as reimbursement of out of pocket expenses.

All we ask of volunteers is a minimum commitment of one hour per week on a regular basis.
This scheme aims to reduce social isolation in older people by helping individuals to form relationships, in order to boost their self esteem and confidence.

Young Volunteers

The Young volunteers are aged between 16—20 years and are involved in intergenerational work within the local community.

The group organise trips out and visit local sheltered accommodation within the area to provide stimulating activities for residents in the community lounges.

This group also have their own space in the Volunteer Centre where they can chill out in a warm and friendly environment
